Traffic mirrors

Two suggestions have been made but the following advice has been given by NCC

 

Unfortunately, traffic mirrors are not prescribed by the DfT and cannot therefore be placed within the highway and if sited in such, would be classified as an illegal obstruction. However, this authority has no objection to private individuals placing mirrors on private land or on their own property. Obviously they will require permission from the land owner if the land does not belong to them and they are also advised to contact their local planning authority in case the mirror requires planning permission. For your information, the highway normally includes the road and any grass verges or footways up to a field/property fence or boundary wall.

It should also be pointed out that traffic mirrors will provide a distorted image especially during inclement weather conditions i.e. rain which should be taken into consideration during any decision to purchase a mirror.

 

For your information, the only signs which this and other local authorities throughout England and Wales can place within the highway are those prescribed by the Department for Transport (DfT) in ‘The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002’.
