Support your local post office.

County Councillor Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South on Northumberland County Council, has issued a strong warning over the long-term viability of local post offices, urging residents  & local businesses across the Tyne Valley to actively support their local branches.

Post offices remain a vital cornerstone of our communities, serving as much more than a venue to send mail. For many residents—particularly the elderly, small business owners, and those without easy access to digital tools—the local post office provides essential over-the-counter banking, parcel delivery, bill payment services, and face-to-face human contact.

However, Councillor Stewart has highlighted growing concerns over the combined pressures facing these essential community hubs. National policy changes, reduced government support frameworks, and shifting consumer habits—such as the rise of online banking, automated digital services, and direct home collection for parcels—are driving footfall away from traditional branches and threatening their financial sustainability.

They provide lifeline services to our most vulnerable residents, help keep local businesses running, and foster, but many local post offices need to reach out to their communities and listen to what they need in these changing  times’
